CHEAP THRILLS: JANIS JOPLIN & ROBERT CRUMB 2009 fine art print / edition of 30 / $280.00 each
This work depicts Drew Friedman's old friend (and favorite artist) Robert Crumb presenting his original Cheap Thrills comic strip album cover art to Janis Joplin (with members of her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, milling around) in 1968. The (fictitious) incident is pictured taking place backstage at the Fillmore West concert hall in San Francisco.

Interestingly, Crumb had originally intended his art for the LP back cover, with a portrait of Joplin to grace the front. But Joplin—an avid fan of underground comics, especially the work of Crumb—so loved the Cheap Thrills illustration that she demanded Columbia Records place it on the front cover. This work was commissioned as a painting by a private collector who owns the original 1968 Crumb Cheap Thrills artwork. It was intended as a companion piece to hang adjacent to the original in the collector's office. Although image rights are retained by Drew Friedman, approval was sought from and granted by the collector for us to issue this work as a limited edition replica.

Only thirty (30) prints of CHEAP THRILLS were produced for this edition. Each full-color print is signed in the lower right, hand-titled in the center, and numbered in the lower left (all beneath the image). Numbers 1/30 thru 28/30 have been sold, and we are now offering print number 29/30, unframed, for $280.00 (plus shipping & handling). The final print, number 30/30 will be offered at $300.00. However, both remaining prints can be purchased, each at the current price. Once the edition sells out, this work will no longer be available from us as a fine art print.

The image area is 13-3/4" high x 13-5/8" wide on an untrimmed 22" x 17" sheet. Paper, ink, and production specifications, as well as shipping details, are available on our PRINT SPECS page.
