Author Merrill Markoe discusses Shemp Howard in her foreword to Drew’s upcoming book Drew Friedman’s Chosen People (Fantagraphics, November 2017):

To appreciate Drew Friedman is to appreciate Shemp, maybe even a little too much. Though I grew up endlessly re-watching The Three Stooges, I’m embarrassed to admit that I shrugged off Shemp in favor of Curly. In my opinion, Curly improved the quality of life on planet Earth with his pantheon of new noises and the magnificence of the one arm-floor spin. When Curly shed this mortal coil, the men who took his place seemed to be on an impossible Zeppo Marxian fool’s mission.

At least that’s how I felt until I became friends with Drew, whose tireless championing of the Shemp oeuvre caused me to not only realize that Shemp HAD an oeuvre, but to view the Stooge replacement landscape from a new vantage point. Drew pointed out that Shemp “looks real, like a regular guy you might find working in a crummy restaurant, a crummy shoe store, or a crummy cigar store.” Drew also explained to me that “Shemp has been called ‘The ugliest man in Hollywood.’ I’ve always seen and championed the beauty in ugliness.” That’s when a new light went on.
