Description
In honor of the 70th birthday of his favorite artist, Drew Friedman has rendered this iconic portrait of Robert Crumb (born Aug. 30, 1943). The portrait depicts Crumb in the mid-1970s, posed with his banjo, as he appeared with his band The Cheap Suit Serenaders. The string band played songs from, and in the original style of, the 1920s, including ragtime, hot jazz, blues, vaudeville songs, and medicine show tunes.
At that point in his career, Crumb had been acknowledged as a groundbreaking cartoonist whose appeal and influence were worldwide. Although never a hippie, his comics and style came to define a visual aesthetic associated with 1960s alternative culture. But he kept going, and Crumb continues creating idiosyncratic art to this day.
Friedman has never wavered in his admiration for Crumb’s talent—visual and musical, and he is honored to count Crumb as a friend.
